Finding a psychologist, counselor, or therapist in Connecticut

Finding a Therapist you can trust in Connecticut

Finding the right therapist in Connecticut can come with its challenges. We can all relate to the good ol’ Google search when trying to find the right restaurant to suit our palette but how about using Google to find the right therapist? Anxiety, trauma, grief, and stressful life events can make it especially difficult to find the motivation to begin searching for a therapist in CT and especially taking the step to email or making that initial phone call.

It can be overwhelming seeing the search results comes across your screen and it may feel like you are searching for a needle in a haystack when it comes to finding the right therapist for you. I would like to help you find a therapist in Connecticut who can help. Here are common challenges that you may experience when searching to find a therapist in CT and helpful solutions to overcome them.

Challenge #1: Navigating the Options

With so many therapists coming up in your search, it can be overwhelming to choose the right one. Each therapist has their own specialties, approaches, and personalities, making it difficult to know where to start. Sometimes a therapist’s website or a therapy directory can sound like alphabet soup. You may have heard or read about therapist that specialize in treatments like ART, CPT, DBT, EMDR and wondered, what does all this even mean, and can it help me?

Solution #1: Research and Referrals

Start by researching therapists in Connecticut. Look for online directories and ask for referrals from trusted sources such as friends, family, or other healthcare providers. Personal recommendations can be invaluable in finding a therapist in CT who is a good fit. Next, research the type of therapy or treatment the therapist offers from credible sources to see if it the modality suits your needs and feels right for you.

Solution #2: Check Credentials and Specializations

Ensure the therapist is licensed and has experience in treating the specific issues you are facing. For example, if you are seeking help for trauma, look for a therapist in Connecticut who specializes in trauma and uses evidence-based approaches. For example, I love working with trauma an anxiety and I have extensive training in evidence based approaches that really work. My favorite is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) because it helps people to feel relief in just a few sessions.

Solution #3: Book a Consultation

Many therapists offer a free initial phone consultation. This can be a great opportunity to discuss your needs, ask questions, and see if you feel comfortable with the therapist. This can ultimately determine if they are the right fit for you. If you don’t feel like they are the right fit, it's ok to ask the therapist who they might recommend. As a helping professional, therapists understand and want to help support you finding a therapist that can help you. I make sure to do an initial consultation with every person who is considering seeing me. I want to make sure it is a good fit for us both, and if I am not the right person, I want to send you in the right direction.

Challenge #2: Stigma and Fear

Although there has been a lot of progress, there is still a stigma surrounding mental health, and some people may feel ashamed or fearful about seeking therapy. This can prevent them from taking the first step.

Solution #1: Addressing Stigma

Remember that seeking therapy is a courageous and proactive step towards improving your mental health and wellbeing. Just as important as our physical health, our mental health is also an important priority. Taking the time to put your wellness first is a sign of courage and strength. Consider also talking to someone you trust who has gone to therapy. Knowing that you are not alone is one of the most powerful ways to defeat stigma or shame.

Solution #2: Addressing Fear

Remembering your WHY. It can be helpful before even starting your search for a therapist in Connecticut on Google, therapy directories, or asking around to get clear on your reason for seeking help. It can be helpful to write down on a piece of paper or notes section of your phone, why you want help and specifically what in your life you would like to see improve. Having this written down can come in handy when fear, stigma, procrastination or even overwhelm may begin to seep in. With a clear focus of your why, you will be more likely to take the next step, even when you may face challenges.

I have successfully built a cash pay psychotherapy practice from scratch on a shoestring budget. I have also failed a licensed exam by 1 point (only to have the licensing board send me a later months later saying I passed), started an online study group to ease my own isolation and have now reached thousands of therapists across the country, helped other therapists market their psychotherapy practices, and helped awesome business owners move from close to closing their doors, to being profitable in less than 6 weeks. I've failed at launching online programs. I've had wild success at launching online programs. I've made mistakes in private practice I've taught others how to avoid my mistakes. You can do this. You were called to this work. Now- go do it! Find some help or inspiration as you need it- but do the work!
